If you wish for your child to be an excellent student, help your child in opening up the world of ideas. His rekindled joy in discovery will translate onto his schoolwork, and soon, he’ll be breezing through the exams.
1. CONSTANT READING
You can either take turns to read with your child, or set a family reading time when everyone picks and reads his own book. Set an example of how important is to you by filling your home with printed materials: newspapers, novels, magazines, and even posters.
2. MOTIVATE HIM TO SPEAK UP
Encourage your child to express his opinion, talk about his emotions, and make choices to express. Ask for his input on family decisions, and show that it is valued. Perhaps you can let him decide upon the menu for one of the weekday dinner, or let him come up with suggestions for a weekend getaway.
3. SHOW HIM THE NEW THINGS YOU LEARN WITH ENTHUSIASM
Share with him the different ways you source for new information, whether you’re looking for a new recipe on the internet or joining a book club at a community centre.
4. FIND OUT WHAT HE’S LEARNING IN SCHOOL
Don’t just ask him about his grades or test scores, ask him to teach you what he learned in school today- having him paraphrasing the lesson will help him retain what he learned (not to mention, it’ll be fun to have him play the role of the teacher).
5. CELEBRATE ACHIEVEMENTS, NO MATTER HOW TRIVIAL
Completing a writing assignment at home calls for a special treat; finishing a book gives your child an hour of video games. Offering positive reinforcement will make learning fun and inspire him to keep challenging himself.
6. FOCUS ON HIS STRENGTHS AND DEVELOP HIS TALENTS
Even if he didn’t do well in his science paper, she may have did well for her English composition. In addition to an exercise book for science practice, give him a writing journal.
7. ENCOURAGE HIM TO QUESTION EVERYTHING
Make anything that happens in the day an opportunity for him him learn. Ask him to explore the world around him by asking questions, creating connections, and drawing conclusions.
